TODAY’S NN&V HEADLINES

  • Liberal Legislators Squealing like Infants (Gov. Jim Gibbons) – Well, the State of the State address is behind us.  The situation we find ourselves in today is really our own fault.
  • Montandon Proposes Fixing Housing Woes FAST (Montandon for Governor campaign) – Republican Nevada Gubernatorial candidate and former Mayor of North Las Vegas Mike Montandon announced on Thursday a unique commonsense conservative plan to prevent home foreclosures and stabilize the State’s housing market.
  • Palin, Tea Partiers and Nevada (Pat Kerby) – In my continuing education on the real functioning of government, I have been learning about the tactics and practices of propaganda.  The role of propaganda in America is to keep the bewildered herd (we the people, according to the propagandists) from ever really effecting policy.
  • Sue Lowden is the Conservative Who Can Win (Saul Anuzis) – Harry Reid has been the Democrats’ leader for their radical, left wing agenda being forced through Congress. Our country desperately needs to kick Harry Reid out of office and replace him with someone who will fight for conservative principles.
  • Unconstitutional Property Tax Practices Reviewed (Phillip Moyer/Nevada News Bureau) – A Department of Taxation workshop held today reviewed proposals to equalize property taxes, a requirement of the Nevada State Constitution that county assessors have had difficulty realizing.

TARK TALES

Again, where is that ballot initiative Danny Tarkanian promised last fall which would protect Nevada from being forced into ObamaCare?  I guess talk really is cheaper than action.

OTHER NEWS & VIEWS

Most lawmakers hate the citizen initiative process.  The better public policy to them, writes Steve Sebelius in CityLife this week “is to let the Legislature deal with the issue.”

“But that’s just the thing,” Sebelius notes.  “They hardly ever do.”  Which is why various groups opt for the expensive and time-consuming signature-gathering initiative process rather than be stonewalled by legislators.

Loathing the thought that citizens might tread on their lawmaking prerogatives, legislators have crafted 5,000-plus words of legalese to make participation by citizens as difficult as possible.

And of all the complicated rules and regulations, the one most effective in killing off citizen initiatives before they ever even make it on the ballot is a constitutionally questionable “single subject” requirement which basically says voters are too stupid to understand more than one concept at a time.

The single-subject rule is the most horrendous obstacle to citizens being able to participate in the political process.  That much I’ve known for a while.  What I didn’t know, however, until reading Steve’s article, is that the author of this egregious anti-democratic monstrosity was Republican Assembly Minority Leader Heidi Gansert, who, unfortunately, appears to be running unopposed in the GOP primary again this year.

Too bad.

TUBE TIPS

Liberals angry with Nevada Democrats over the budget crisis go Face to Face with Jon Ralston tonight.  The program airs at 4:00 pm Monday through Friday on KVBC Channel 3 in Las Vegas, as well as NBC affiliates in Reno and Elko.  http://www.lasvegassun.com/videos/face-face/

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“My favorite Winter Olympic event? Women’s Biathlon. It is a combination of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Why is it my favorite? Athletic, attractive women. In skin-tight outfits. With guns. If they allowed beach volleyball players to carry side arms I do believe it would be the perfect spectator sport.” – Blogger Rich Galen of Mullings.com
