NO FIRST FRIDAY THIS FIRST FRIDAY

The first Friday of January is this Friday, but there will be no First Friday Happy Hour at Stoney’s in Las Vegas or Harrah’s in Reno this Friday.  Instead, the First Friday happy hours will be held on the second Friday this month, which will be next Friday, not this Friday.

I hope that clears up any confusion.

Publishing Note: NN&V will be taking off the rest of the weekend to celebrate New Year’s.  We’ll return with more conservative “stuff” on Monday.

TODAY’S NN&V HEADLINES

  • The 2009 Top 10 Conservatives in Nevada (Chuck Muth) – OK, before getting to my list of the Top 10 Nevada conservatives for 2009, our friend Dave Berns, former host of KNPR’s “State of Nevada radio program, raised the question about what exactly is a conservative.  And for that definition, at least as far as I’m concerned for our Top 10 list, I give you former Reagan press secretary Lyn Nofziger, who shared his definition of the term several years ago before he passed away….
  • On Terrorism it’s Time to Know, to Profile, and to Discriminate (Newt Gingrich) – After the Christmas Day near disaster in Detroit, it is time for Americans to demand effective anti-terrorist actions.
  • DeMint Decries Union Obstruction in TSA (Warner Todd Huston)The Democrats are trying to paint the GOP as “obstructionists” for blocking the appointment of Obama’s choice of Erroll Southers to head up the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Democrats are claiming that by blocking the closure of debate on Southers the GOP is trying to obstruct “tighter security at airports.”
  • Gibbons Says Nevada Airports Safe, Criticizes Obama’s Handling of Terrorist Attack (Sean Whaley/Nevada News Bureau)Gov. Jim Gibbons said air travelers should feel safe passing through Nevada’s two major airports despite last week’s attempted terrorist attack at Detroit, but he also strongly criticized the Obama Administration for failing to take proper actions to head off the failed attempt to blow up an airplane.
  • Estimates Show Nevada Lost Population in 2009 (Sean Whaley/Nevada News Bureau) – For the first time in decades, Nevada’s population actually declined from one year to the next, dropping 1 percent from 2008 to 2009, according to preliminary estimates prepared by the Nevada State Demographer’s Office.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

Governor Jim Gibbons stood up to the Legislature and kept his promise to keep government growth under control and stop raising taxes.  He made a promise to us all and he kept it.  My vision for our state and Governor Gibbons’ vision for our state are the same, we both want state spending brought under control and we both want relief from higher taxes on Nevada’s families.” – former state Sen. Bob Beers (Hat tip: Jon Ralston)
