TODAY’S NN&V HEADLINES

  • The Fortunes of Nevada will Rise or Fall without Harry Reid in the Senate (Chuck Muth) – About the only real argument for the re-election of Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nevada, is his position as Senate majority leader. But if that’s all he’s got, he hasn’t got much. No politician in America is indispensable. Or irreplaceable.
  • CANDID CANDIDATE: An e-Interview Ellie Lopez-Bowlan (Nancy Dallas) – Ellie Lopez-Bowlan is running for Assembly District 26 in Washoe County.  A Reno nurse practitioner and former Reno Gazette-Journal columnist, Ellie holds a master’s of science degree from the University of Nevada, Reno.  She served as President of the Mt. Rose Republican Women.
  • How Are Republicans Going to Win? (Mark Noonan) – Anyone feeling excited about next year’s Senate contest?
  • Action Needed Soon to End U.S. Dependence on Oil (Sean Whaley/Nevada News Bureau) – If the United States does not begin to wean itself from its dependence on oil within the next several years, limited supply and increasing demand by countries like China and India could spell economic disaster, a UNR professor said today.
  • Virgin Galactic’s Latest (Paul Jacob) – It seems like only yesterday that Burt Rutan flew SpaceShip One into near-orbit and received the Ansari X-Prize for piloting the first manned private craft into space.

MUTHS TRUTHS

So I’m reading a full-page ad in today’s Las Vegas Review-Journal for the Better Business Bureau.  And the ad says that the “State of Nevada Consumer Affairs office closed its doors on June 30th.”

Really?  Who knew?  I must have missed a memo.

More importantly, who has missed this government “service”?  I’d venture to say….practically nobody.

And get this: With the government operation closed, more and more people will now use the privately-funded Better Business Bureau – which is good for the BBB, consumers and taxpayers.  Everybody wins.

Except, of course, the non-essential former employees of the government-run Consumer Affairs office who probably just ended up working in other government jobs at a community college or something.

Makes you wonder what other non-essential government “services” could be eliminated without anyone noticing or caring, huh?

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“A final vote (on the Senate version of the health care reform bill) is scheduled for Christmas Eve when Americans will be giving and opening gifts to celebrate the gift of a baby – the birth of Jesus Christ.  Meanwhile Senator Harry Reid has scheduled a vote for his abortion laden health care reform bill for Christmas Eve.  Harry Reid is giving abortions for Christmas.” – Don Nelson, Nevada LIFE, 12/20/09
