The race for chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC) is heating up. One of the key voting members of the committee says the GOP needs to appoint a chairman who will reestablish the party’s conservative bona fides. 

Americans for Tax Reform will be sponsoring a public debate on January 5 between all of the candidates for the RNC chairmanship. The event will be held at the National Press Club in Washington and broadcast on C-SPAN. The following day, the RNC Conservative Steering Committee will meet and interview the candidates.
 
Among the candidates vying for the position are former Mike Huckabee campaign spokesman Chip Saltsman, Michigan GOP chairman Saul Anuzis, South Carolina GOP chairman Katon Dawson, former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, and former Maryland Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele.
 
RNC vice chairman Jim Bopp, Jr. is a prominent Republican lawyer from Indiana who advised Mitt Romney on life issues during his presidential run. He says the GOP will continue to lose elections if it promotes a centrist message that downplays the importance of social issues like abortion and same-sex “marriage.”
 
“We’ve already tried that and we nominated John McCain, who opposed the federal marriage amendment in Congress, who had positions on a number of important issues that were contrary to the Republican platform — and the result was a massive defeat,” says Bopp. “So we’ve tried that. It’s foolish, and it has led to where we are now.”
 
Bopp argues the GOP chair must share the conservative principles that are reflected in the party’s platform and be able to unite all aspects of the conservative movement.
